Toc H - ANZAC Day Ceremony Performance 2024
ANZAC Square
24-04-2024 19:30 – 25-04-2024 01:00
Every year, QUMS sings at the midnight memorial ceremony for ANZAC Day in the city centre, hosted by the charity group Toc H Australia. We will be performing Lustorum Anime, as well as the Australian and Aotearoa (New Zealand) national anthems. This year the ceromony lands on a Wednesday evening, so we won't have our usual weekly rehersal beforehand. Instead, come join us beforehand at Grill'd Toowong for a group dinner at 7:30pm! Traditionally a few of us also head to Pancake Manor every year after this performance, so please join us there if you're not too tired afterwards. Please let us know if you will be attending the performance by grabbing a ticket below. This is important so we can keep track of numbers and ensure member safety on the night.

QUMS at Eisteddfod 2024
Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, South Bank Campus
18:00 – 22:00
The Qld Eisteddfod is a choir competition at Easter each year, which QUMS often attends. This year it's in Brisbane! We go to Eisteddfod because competition is a great way to improve as a choir and as individual singers. We get to listen to a whole bunch of other choirs too, and be part of a broader community.  This year QUMS - the whole choir, or at least as many of us as can attend, we'll need at least 20 singers - has entered the Sacred choral contest. We'll be performing O Sacrum Convivium and Down to the Water on the evening of Good Friday (March 29th).   Other events will be running throughout Friday and Saturday, including the Massed Sing on the Saturday night.  Every performer will need a ticket as the Eisteddfod charges admission. Getting your ticket via QUMS is both easier for you and lets us know you'll be there :)   If you're performing small group items with Bits and Pieces, you will need a season pass (as your events occur over multiple sessions on both Saturday and Sunday) and (for everyone's convenience) you can purchase that pass via QUMS. If you're only singing in the Sacred but would like to be in the audience for other events, you can also puchase a season pass.

Academic Dinner — QUMS Celebration Night 2023!
Ovolo The Valley
19:00 – 23:00
You are cordially invited to QUMS's annual Academic Dinner!  Come enjoy a two-course dinner, toasts, awards, and, of course, singing to close out a wonderful 2023. There will be food. There will be drinks. There will be fancy dress. There will be toasts. There will be awards. And you can bet there will be singing. The dress code is formal so make sure to bring your fanciest self!  Regarding food, we have some decisions to make! So please have a look at this menu and let us know what you would like here. We'll have awards! Who's been quietly (or not so quietly) been making your section great? They're our Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass of the Year. Who's shone bright from the start? They're our Fresher of the Year. Who's gone above and beyond in every way? They're our QUMSian of the Year. Let us know who you want to see recognised by filling out the survey here! We might even have a few cheeky extra awards, for people who've done something iconic and unique in a way that doesn't quite fit the normal groove.  We'll have toasts! And since we are a choir, there will be some singing involved. Please familiarise yourself with the songs...

The Creation
160 Vulture St
14:00 – 16:30
Join us for a transcendent afternoon of celestial harmonies! Be transported to the very moment when light burst forth from the void, when the first whispers of life stirred, and when the heavens and Earth were sculpted into existence. The voices of the QUMS choir and our fantastic guest soloists, accompanied by the brilliant Christian Gante on piano, soar to new heights in Joseph Haydn's "The Creation." Step into a world of awe and wonder as we recreate the genesis of the universe through this masterful oratorio, guided by Haydn's genius composition and inspired by the timeless words of Milton's "Paradise Lost." Each soloist, with their unique vocal prowess, will embody the characters and narratives that bring this monumental work to life. As their ethereal voices intertwine with the choir, you'll witness the sheer power of music to capture the majesty of creation itself. --- Our venue for this afternoon is the church at 160 Vulture Street, South Brisbane. Parking will be extremely limited on-site and neaby, so we recommend travelling by public transport - South Bank train and busway station are less than 10 minutes' walk away.  QUMS is happy to honour the Companion Card.

Physiology 63-360
10:00 – 16:00
QUMS members are invited to join us for an in-depth vocal workshop and rehearsal on Sunday 3rd September 2023! Presented by our Musical Director – Guillaume Lemay-Yates, who is currently undertaking a Master of Music Studies specialising in conducting with an emphasis on vocal pedagogy and choral conducting. This workshop will be an excellent opportunity to get deeper insight into vocal technique which we rarely have time to dive into during regular rehearsals. We will look at the physiology and anatomy of singing, explore the accent breathing method and put this knowledge into practice by applying it to this semester’s repertoire. The workshop will take place on campus at UQ St Lucia and run from 10am - 4pm with a 1-hour break for lunch. There is no cost for attending, but please make sure to register!

"He's bona fide!" Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of music as we celebrate the sounds of the cult-classic movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou.” This semester, we're heading right to the heart of the American South with its soulful harmonies and foot-stomping rhythms. Our guest artist for this afternoon is Scarlett Road — a Country-Bluegrass-Folk-inspired group of five ladies guaranteed to bring joy to your soul.   Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the movie or simply a lover of great music, this concert is not to be missed! Choir Camp S1 2023!
Camp Moogerah
14-04-2023 16:00 – 16-04-2023 14:00
IMPORTANT: Fill in the Camp Transport form too, so that we can organise lifts. “ ...And this one time, ...when I was at a Choir-Camp...” One weekend each semester, QUMS will host a Choir Camp. This is a weekend retreat, from Friday evening through to Sunday afternoon. As well as being a lot of fun (themed dress-up night, musical revues, board games, and more), we workshop and rehearse in-depth for the upcoming concert. Camp weekends are the cheapest fully-catered weekend away you’ll ever get! Attendance is very important, as it equates to several rehearsals worth of learning. Transport, dietary requirements etc are all catered for. If you must be absent try to make at least a part of the weekend, and discuss with your Section Leader and Musical Director. Payment plans are available, so no drama if you have any financial issues! Just talk to our friendly treasurer Nelson Vermeer :) If you have First Aid skills, let us know :) Please note that mobile phone reception isn't great. It's a little bit off the grid for a reason! FAQs Camping/Tents??!!  NO! No tents. Real beds are provided in dormitories of 4 or 8 people, so you can "get a room" with your friends. Or make new ones. Bring your own bedding/sleeping-bag. Food? Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner - all prepared in a great kitchen. We all take turns helping out as required.  Allergies and dietary needs? We ask everybody a comprehensive set of questions so that we can feed you all properly and safely! Ablution blocks? Accomodation is cabin-style, with showers/toilets in separate blocks. Bring thongs (flip-flops), your own soap and towel! Tell Us a Joke!  A time-held tradition... You may get "banged-up" at dinner and put on the spot to stand up and tell your best/worst joke.  So be sure you bring a joke to share. Fancy Dress? The theme for Saturday night dress-up is... 1930s! Talent Show? Another time-honoured tradition: After dinner on Saturday, we entertain each other! If you have a favourite song/ditty/parody or act that you can entertain us with, the stage is all yours for your crack at fame. Or infamy. Judges will decide the winner - but they are easily bribed with chocolates / favours / pretty much anything, so bring along a suitable "incentive" :-) Older QUMSians call this event "Revue". Alcohol?  No, for several reasons. Moogerah is now a 'dry' campsite. And we want to still be in top form on Sunday morning – partying until 3am on Saturday night doesn't achieve that. There are also insurance issues.  Day-trippers? Some folks may not relish the idea of overnighting in anything other than their own feather beds. If this is you, you have the option of commuting (it is a good hour+ drive) each day. Be sure to arrive by 8:30am. If you arrive earlier, you may be rewarded with a hot breakfast. COVID-19? We'll have plenty of hand sanitiser. PLENTY. If you're feeling sick, probably better that you don't come to Camp. Refunds are available. We've also compiled a list of health professionals in the area should we need them. We will cancel Camp if it comes to it, but at this stage we don't think we'll need to. Everyone will be refunded, so don't worry.    The full Camp Info Sheet is available here. The Camp Transport Form is available here.
